Teaching Black History

Black History Month has been observed in Canada since 1995. People of African descent were among the earliest settlers of this country, but they have been largely excluded from the history taught in Canadian schools. While it is important to recognize Black history during the month of February, the ultimate goal is that the contributions of Blacks be woven into the curriculum throughout the year.

To this end, we have designed resources to facilitate the integration of the history and the contributions of Black Canadians into the classroom.  Our timelines, lesson plans and activity sheets are a starting point for educators to integrate the contributions of Blacks into their lessons for students.

The timelines provide a starting point to help students situate the contributions of Blacks on the Canadian settlement, human rights, and political landscape.  Within each timeline are links to other online sources to help students further explore the topic. Posters, which summarize the information on the timelines, are also available to purchase.

Coming soon are timelines of the contributions of Blacks to the Canadian athletic and cultural landscape. The timelines are provided free of charge. Contact us if you would like to embed the timelines into your website.

Resources such as lesson plans and activity sheets will be available for teachers to help them use these timelines in their classrooms.
